A business plan is usually regarded as an exaggerated and overly enthusiastic document to secure funding for a business idea. Sheer folly if that is all that your business plan is! If it is sitting gathering dust, then it simply isn’t working for you.
When I started SageProse Proofreading I decided I wouldn’t seek outside investment. I created a simple business model that would rest on the foundations of what I already had. I had my skill set and previous experience, the basic equipment and a goal. I did need support to build my business and my local job centre provided practical help and mentoring. To secure this support I still required a business plan to prove my idea was credible. If I wasn’t seeking financial assistance, what could I put in my business plan?
It seemed a great idea to turn my business plan into a blueprint for success. The blueprint allowed me to explore my business idea fully and to think about the steps that would take me closer to my vision of success. I wanted to support my own community, providing a service to local office groups and staffing structures. My business plan became a guide to my ideal customers, who they were and where they were. That way, my business plan clearly demonstrated where I should place myself.
I am still in the early stages of my little business venture, I understand I am no entrepreneurial poster girl that can claim to be a major influencer in the business world. I do have a living business plan that is my constant companion, guiding me forward toward my ultimate ambition. By adding and removing elements of the blueprint through experience, my plan evolves with me and my dreams slowly evolve into goals with defined steps to get there.
My ultimate ambition is to have a comprehensive proofreading and editorial service to provide support for my local business community, providing assistance to offices and staff structures in my area. I want to be that extra member of staff and the first person they think of. I have training and experience to undertake to accomplish the goals to advance my ambition.
My business plan is not a dusty and forgotten begging letter but an evolving work in progress that will guide and focus as my venture naturally grows. So plug it in… charge the defibrillators… bring it to life and let it live!
