Before I began working from home, I did a little bit of ‘micro research’ to find out how to keep my personal and professional life separate. I had heard it was a serious ‘thing’, you had to be strict. No laundry propped up on the printer, a separate phone for business that can be switched off at night, don’t work in your Jim Jams and things of that nature. Good, sage advice. Although, I think I may have slipped up occasionally on the last one.
There were plenty of these articles, detailing how to make it work, but my favourite were the ultimate solutions with photographic wonders of the ‘man cave’ and the ‘man space’. Glossy pictures abounded of professional men working from home, converting their sheds and conservatories into the ultimate man cave. I wondered, do you have to be a man to have a man cave? I wanted one of those little havens of peace, disturbed by nobody until I exited my little war room, content with the ministrations of my empire for the day.
I do not have such a facility to convert into the ultimate control room for the SageProse empire. However, the core idea is valid and important. You do indeed need to strictly control your working environment. I have a large desk along one side of my living room wall. Nothing but work is on that desk and nobody would dream of touching anything upon it. I have to make do with the space I have and control it as if it is my little man cave, sadly without a mini bar and a gaming chair.
Nevertheless, my empire is run from the captain’s chair at the control desk. I keep strict hours and when the day is done I switch off my business phone, prepare the work for the next day and switch into personal mode. I passionately believe men should have their own hobbies and spaces, a break to be in a place on their own and be themselves completely. I usually honour that, but in this instance I would dearly love to steal their man cave, if that’s ok?
